Both The Arts Society Samlesbury and the The Arts Society North West Area host occasional days where members can enjoy presentations on topics of interest.
We are very pleased to offer a summer outing to Ripley Castle and Gardens, Nr. Harrogate on 12th July, 2018. We will be departing by coach from Samlesbury Hotel, Preston New Road, Preston, PR5 0UL (where lectures are held) at 8.45 a.m. and expect to arrive in Ripley at approximately 11.00 a.m. There will be a guided tour of the castle at 12 noon which will take about 70 minutes. A soup and sandwich lunch including tea or coffee will be taken at 1.30 p.m. and then you are invited to enjoy the gardens and estate village at your leisure. We will be departing from Ripley at 3.30 p.m.
Cost of the coach, tour, lunch and tip is £35.00 per person. We hope to arrive in time for coffee before the tour, but this has not been included in the price.
Ripley Castle has been the home of the Ingilby family for twenty-six generations and Sir Thomas and Lady Ingilby and their five children continue the tradition. The guided tours are amusing and informative, following the lives and loves of one family for nearly 700 years and how they have been affected by events in English history. For example, the Ingilby family was related to 9 of the 11 main Gunpowder Plot conspirators and a secret priest hole was rediscovered after 400 years. We can see the library where Jane Ingilby held Oliver Cromwell at gun point after the Battle of Marston Moor and much much more.
